The lens of the eye is a protein and water filled device within a tougher outer shell. It has a pulp like texture. Sometimes clumps of protein group together in the lens, perhaps because of too much UV exposure and the lens then becomes cloudy.

Surgeons either use a special probe or an ultra-sound device to remove the cloudy center portion of the lens. The outer part of the lens remains and a new intra-ocular lens is inserted into the lens shell.
