Choosing Between Traditional and Custom Lasik Story

Choosing Between Traditional and Custom Lasik

Lasik eyesight-correction surgery, a phenomenal breakthrough when it was first approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration in 1995, has recently been trumped big-time by the innovation known as wavefront Lasik technology, which is some 25 times more precise than its older cousin. The consumer still has both choices available today - the traditional versus the new custom technique - but there is an enormous difference in technology.

Experimental Treatments Show Promise In the Restoration of Vision Story

Experimental Treatments Show Promise In the Restoration of Vision

A retinal prosthesis and fetal tissue transplant are two experimental treatments that appear to restore partial vision to people with blinding eye diseases. Presented at Neuroscience 2009, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, the findings may lead to new treatments for the blind. Researchers also reported that an engineered protein restored vision in an animal model and found ways to improve stem cell treatments.

LASIK Treatment Can Induce Cornea Clouding Story

LASIK Treatment Can Induce Cornea Clouding

While laser eye surgery typically results in miraculously restored vision, there are some cases in which the very center of the cornea clouds up and actually worsens vision.

That’s the bad news, according to a recent study done by a pair of Los Angeles ophthalmologists. The good news is that the opacification of the cornea dissipates on its own in a few months, and the vision problem it produces can be safely reversed with another laser surgery.

2 Vision-Correction Surgeries Equally Effective Story

2 Vision-Correction Surgeries Equally Effective

Two laser eye-surgery techniques offer equal success at re-establishing "perfect" 20/20 vision in people with nearsightedness, a recent study shows.

The study, which was a review of six high-quality scientific studies, sought to which surgical approach would be superior in terms of the vision-correction outcome: LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) or PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). Both techniques use a laser to sculpt the cornea of the eye, making it able to focus light perfectly on the retina at the back of the eye. Lasik Helps U.S. Retain Pilots, Astronauts

The natural human aging process is in a constant war with the U.S. military and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Aging has always degraded the vision of Air Force pilots, Navy divers and NASA astronauts - and this has made it difficult for the respective services to retain them. The government has always feared that eyeglasses and contact lenses could be broken or dislodged in the course of the service members' often grueling work, threatening life, limb and government property in the process. Even with the advent of Lasik surgery, the fear didn't subside.

Eye Diseases Are Rising Amongst the Elderly, But Few See Risk

The American Academy of Opthalmology finds that most Americans are unaware of the risks presented by age-related eye diseases, according to a health survey of 1,200 Americans. The populations most at risk for age related retinal diseases such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration are unaware of the factors that make them susceptible.

High Sugar Diet May Effect Eyesight Story

High Sugar Diet May Effect Eyesight

A diet high in sugar and starch may make the eyes more vulnerable to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of vision loss in the US. A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition tracked dietary information from over 4,000 participants aged 55-80 or 8,0000 eyes which, as some participants developed AMD in one eye and not the other, is how they were tracked. The participants completed dietary surveys and had their eyes checked for AMD. The surveys listed over 90 foods, and asked how often they were eaten. The researchers were particularly interested in foods that had a high glycimic index, like sugar and white flour.

Air Force Allows Pilots With Lasik to Fly Story

Air Force Allows Pilots With Lasik to Fly

For the first time, the US Air Force is allowing aspiring pilots and aircrew members to fly even if they have had LASIK eye surgery. Since 2001, the Air Force has permitted applicants to try for spots as pilots or aircrew members if they have had a corrective eye surgery, known as PRK (photo refractive keratectomy). The Air Force had said it needed more time to evaluate LASIK, a newer procedure.
