Allure and Doubt Regarding Vitamin D
It's long been known that vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and thus good for bone and teeth health. But research now also suggests a role for vitamin D in fending off such chronic diseases as diabetes, immune disorders and cancer.

Obese Women's Newborns Have More Birth Defects
The fetuses of obese women have an increased risk of birth defects such as spina bifida and other neural tube defects, a recent analysis of previous studies showed.
Obesity is at epidemic proportions in the United States and in increasing numbers of countries around the world. Complications from the condition threaten to overwhelm the health-care system. For example, some evidence suggests that pregnant obese women are more prone to give birth to babies with abnormalities, known as congenital anomalies. Such abnormalities contribute significantly to stillbirth, infant death, preterm birth and childhood illnesses. (Read more about Obese Women's Newborns Have More Birth Defects)

Discovery Links Pre-Eclampsia to Diet
Women with the condition pre-eclampsia have been found with red blood cells containing unusually high levels of a compound found in unpasteurized food, according to research published in the journal Reproductive Sciences. The findings are important because they hint at the possibility of this compound, known as "ergothioneine", being an indicator of pre-eclampsia. Further down the line, researchers hope the compound will help them understand the currently unknown cause of the condition. (Read more about Discovery Links Pre-Eclampsia to Diet)

7 Factors That Make Us Eat More Food
The amount we eat every day is a factor not only of our genetics, the strength of our willpower or our metabolic rate. A lot more is at work, such as:
Time of day. Each of us gets into routines that psychologically "tell" our bodies we need food at the same time each day. "Part of the reason you're hungry at noon is because that's the time you've eaten for the last 100 days," said Randy Seeley, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. Moderate Drinking Seems to Improve Bone Density
Drinking a glass or two of wine or beer a day appears to build bone density even better than calcium does, a recent study demonstrated – though drinking more, and consuming spirits instead of low-alcohol drinks, has the opposite effect.
The research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was done by Katherine Tucker of Tufts University in Boston and her colleagues. (Read more about Moderate Drinking Seems to Improve Bone Density)

Expert Commentary: Dr. Micozzi, M.D. May 4, 2009
Water, water, everywhere… oceans, river, lakes, rain, snow… but in general, there is simply not enough in our bodies. Overall, the population is dehydrated. We are told that we should be drinking 8 to 10 glasses of H20 a day. But realistically who does that? So part of my agenda is to create a popular groundswell for drinking more water. It’s a simple, inexpensive way (you don’t have to buy premium bottled water) to support good health, prevent disease and fill fit throughout our lives. More Exercise Induces Women to Eat Treats
Overweight women who engaged in exercise for one to two hours a week lost several pounds over six months without dieting. But paradoxically, those who exercised even more – three hours a week – failed to lose as much as expected.
The researchers, who published their findings in PLoSONE, a Public Library of Science online journal, speculated that the reason for this phenomenon was that the women who exercised the most rewarded themselves with food treats for their “sacrifice.” (Read more about More Exercise Induces Women to Eat Treats)
