With swine flu spreading to a number of countries, most of them developed and with fairly comfortable supplies of antiviral drugs, it might seem that the world is in pretty good shape to suppress a seriously lethal pandemic. 

Although these drugs appear effective against this strain, it should be remembered that theses drugs are not necessarily indicated for cases of low possible exposure or less severe cases of swine influenza.  They should be reserved for more severe infection, those with underlying significant medical problems, and if there is a clear high-risk exposure to an infected individual. Indiscriminant use of these drugs could lead to rapid resistance and decrease their effectiveness.

This latest study in Circulation Research reveals some striking new data. You don’t necessarily have to be overweight to develop atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

The study suggests that danger is the chronic inflammation of the arteries caused by eating fatty foods and is independent of high cholesterol or triglyceride levels.

So another dirty secret? Vitamins a fraud? Another great hoax on the public? It’s an important question, because the public is spending billions of dollars on vitamins.

The history of Vitamins – as are many health cures -- is often faddish. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and now Vitamin D. Each was presented as the next health-saving supplement. Not that they were completely discounted, but the hype was more than follow-up studies demonstrated. A consensus though seems to be building that 3 supplements do have positive impact on our health. They are Vitamin D, Calcium and Fish Oil or Omega-3s.

More and more we are discovering the health benefits of vitamin-D. Most of us tend to stay indoors during the winter months, as I know I certainly do, but lack of exposure to sunlight could mean that you’re not getting enough vitamin D. So taking your lunch outside and soaking up a few rays might be a great idea.


Like with many things, balance is important. Getting half an hour of direct sun exposure a couple times a week can be beneficial, while continually getting sun burns or just baking yourself is not.

Is there an obesity gene? Research demonstrates that there is. In fact there may be several genes that contribute to obesity.

The INSIG2 gene controls insulin. It inhibits the synthesis (manufacturing in the body) of fatty acid and cholesterol. People with a sequence variation near the gene seem less able to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acid and cholesterol. The end result is a tendency to accumulate more body fat. Another culprit gene is a variant version of the FTO gene. People who have this gene tend to eat more to satisfy their appetites. And the children with this gene have a tendency to gain excess fat.

Is Coffee Good or Bad?

So here is another story proclaiming the benefits of coffee. The International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism reports that a cup coffee before high intensity exercise reduces muscle pain thus helping the avid muscle grower work harder.


Well, when I look at my more modest physique in the mirror, I remember being told as a kid that drinking coffee would stunt your growth and should only be drunk as an adult. Only once you had reached full height could you sip this dangerous brew.
