LASEK surgery (Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a new and exciting procedure in the field of Osteopathic Medicine. The treatment requires less than two minutes of actual surgery per eye and will take approximately 1 hour from start to finish. There are many different forms of laser eye surgeries, all of which have the same goal which is to reduce the need for glasses or contacts. The procedure is accomplished by cutting a thin flap in the epithelium. The flap is pealed back and an excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue underneath in order to correct deformities. Once the tissue is removed the flap is left to heal on its own. In LASEK surgery, only the epithelial tissue is cut, while in LASIK both the epithelial and the corneal stroma are cut. Dr. Hornfeld is an expert and will be able to determine which type of corrective laser surgery is best for you.
