What is Coronary Bypass?
In this article we will be talking about:
- What is the danger of blocked arteries?
- What is Coronary Bypass?
- How are blocked arteries Bypassed?
What is the danger of blocked arteries?
The problem occurs when one or more of arteries supplying blood to heart become blocked, usually by a build of plaque. This blockage can result in a lack of basic nutrition and oxygen to the heart's tissue. If it is not corrected, it can lead to a heart attack.
What is Coronary Bypass Surgery?
Coronary Bypass Surgery is the ultimate attempt to reestablish the blood supply to heart's tissue. The heart must be stopped for this procedure. The body is put on a heart and lung machine which takes over the body's cardeovascular functions while doctors operate. Arteries and veins from other parts of the body are used to bypass the blocked section and provide blood to the heart.
How are blocked arteries Bypassed?
A redundant section of the cephalic vein in the leg is removed and attached around the blockage. So the blood in the coronary artery laterally bypasses the blockage. This restarts significant blood flow to the endangered tissue once the heart has being restarted. The choice of conduits is highly dependent upon the particular surgeon and institution. Typically, the left internal thoracic artery (LITA) (previously referred to as left internal mammary artery or LIMA) is attached to the left anterior descending artery and a combination of other veins and arteries is used for other major arteries in the heart. The right internal thoracic artery (RITA), the saphenous vein from the leg and the radial artery from the forearm are used often. The right gastroepiploic artery from the stomach is not used as much because of it's difficult placing for removal from the abdomen.
