An Alternative, Ethical Source for Stem Cells
A new source of stem cells could be as good as embryonic stem cells for researching and developing treatments for a range of serious diseases, and without the ethical implications of embryonic stem cells. Scientists from Germany and the UK have discovered this new source: routine biopsies of men's testicles.
Stem cells from embryos have the potential to become any cell in the body, since a whole person grows from a single fertilized egg. But ethical issues arise because extracting stem cells requires the destruction of embryos. (Read more about An Alternative, Ethical Source for Stem Cells)

New Boon for Pancreatic Cancer Patients
A new drug therapy that annihilates the blood vessels that grow to feed malignant tumors is showing considerable promise in increasing the longevity of patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Recent research, led by Matthias Löhr of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, shows that a drug called EndoTAG-1 (chemical name: cationic lipid complexed paclitaxel), when infused with gemcitabine, can substantially extend life. In his study involving 200 subjects with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, Löhr treated half of them, the control group, with gemcitabine alone. (Read more about New Boon for Pancreatic Cancer Patients)

Technique Finds Hard-to-Spot Breast Tumors
A new system nimbly finds tumors masked by dense breast tissue that mammograms ordinarily can't spot - and at half the cost and with a vastly lower rate of false positives.
The technique, known as Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI), is especially targeted at the nearly one-fourth of women above 40 who have dense breast tissue, which allows malignancies to lie hidden until it's too late.
What's done with MBI is simply to inject a radioactive tracer into the breast. It's absorbed by the cancer cells, and the resulting "glow" is picked up by special cameras. The body excretes the tracer within a day. (Read more about Technique Finds Hard-to-Spot Breast Tumors)

What is the Polypill?
Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed. Low Fat Diet Linked to Reduced Risk of Ovarian Cancer
A recent study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that there is a link between a low fat diet high in fruits, vegetables, and grains and a reduced risk of ovarian cancer. The discovery came from the Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Randomized Controlled Trial over 8 years. The trial assigned 20,000 women to the diet change group and had 30,000 women maintain their current diet. The diet change group limited their fat intake to only 20 percent of their total calories and had to eat 5 or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables in addition to 6 or more servings of grains. All Types of Alcohol Linked to Breast Cancer Risk
A recent study by Kaiser Permanente Researchers has found that the effects of alcohol on breast cancer are the same, regardless of whether a woman drinks wine, beer, or liquor. The ethyl alcohol found in those drinks and the quantity consumed are the factors that weigh heavily on breast cancer risk. Researchers believe the increased risk from three or more drinks a day is similar to the increased breast cancer risk from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day or more. They claim that "Population studies have consistently linked drinking alcohol to an increased risk of female breast cancer, but until now there has been little data, most of it conflicting, about an independant role played by the choice of beverage type." Is there a relation between Deodorants and breast cancer?
British scientists measured the aluminum content inside of breast tissue to find a relation between breast cancer and deodorants. They found that there is a significantly higher portion in the outer regions of the breast that have the greatest exposure to antiperspirant. This recent study identified a specific distribution of aluminum in breast tissue which may be associated with breast cancer. Sun Pill
It’s here: a product that claims to help protect you from sunburn…in pill form.
The makers call this the “sun defense breakthrough of the decade.” So is it all that? Does it do what its makers claims it does?
Some of the experts with whom we spoke aren'’t so sure.
A company called pure pharmaceuticals has started marketing this: it’s called Sunpill.
Dr. Perry Robins is a dermatologist who has been featured on the Sunpill website and promotional videos. He says Sunpill increases the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning. “If it is fifteen minutes or thirty minutes depending on the day and your skin type this will increase it fifty percent so you will be able to go out forty five minutes before you get burned,” Dr. Robins states.
The proof of the claim? (Read more about Sun Pill)
