What is the Polypill?
Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the Polypill. The Polypill is being developed in response to an important reality surrounding cardiovascular disease. There are three important drugs that can help prevent heart disease (statins, ACE inhibitors, and aspirin). These drugs are not taken for two major reasons. First, the drugs are simply too expensive for much of the world, including countries as developed as Russia. And secondly, in developed nations where the drugs are affordable patients too often fail to comply - after three years 70% of patients do not take the medications as prescribed. Several cancer treatment centers, such as the Eastchester Center for Cancer Care, are acknowledging the importance of going beyond treating the physical challenge of cancer. Cancer centers now focus on providing emotional support through both a warm environment and a compassionate staff. (Read more about Humanistic Cancer Care)

Health Wrap - June 2
A new UCLA/Veteran's Affairs study showed that more than 40 percent of patients who initially had received a positive result on a fecal occult blood test –a stool guiaic card which is an initial screening tool for colon cancer -- did not receive appropriate follow-up tests like a colonoscopy or a barium enema.
Only 59 percent of this group received follow-up diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy or a barium enema.
Forty-one percent received no follow-up at all in the six months following the positive stool study.
The authors say any healthcare system that provides cancer-screening programs needs to track each step in the screening process to help ensure that patients don't slip through cracks in the system. (Read more about Health Wrap - June 2)

Screenings for the Elderly
We’re not getting any younger. And there are plenty of baby boomers who are suddenly looking at their senior years.
But with all the push to get screened for cancer, when is it ok to stop getting tested, in particular, for colon cancer?
This is something that is mostly missing from preventive care recommendations.
We know when to start screening for breast cancer, and colon cancer, but when does one stop?
The answer: it depends.
“I had a mammogram in august for the second time in twenty years.” So maybe Henrietta Bethune isn’t exactly a poster child for aggressively pursuing good preventative care. But at least she’s at the doctor today. (Read more about Screenings for the Elderly)

Weekly Health Wrap
New research out of a major radiology meeting shows that virtual colonoscopy along with computer-aided detection is highly effective for finding colon polyps, which can become cancerous.
Virtual colonoscopy is desirable because there is no risk of bleeding or colon perforation and intravenous sedation is unnecessary. The procedure is less costly than conventional colonoscopy and it’s more convenient, taking 15 minutes or less. (Read more about Weekly Health Wrap)

VIRTUAL COLONOSCOPY
There’s no question, early screening for colon cancer saves lives, particularly among those aged 50 and older. But there is a debate now among medical experts: can patients get as good, and as safe a reading by using virtual colonoscopy, which uses x-ray images, or must they still go for a standard colonoscopy which uses a scope to look into the colon?
